Jaundice is caused by too much bilirubin.
Bilirubin is a yellow-colored substance in the blood. If your baby has jaundice, you may notice their skin and eyes look yellowish.
Infant jaundice is common in breastfed babies because their metabolism tends to start a little slower. It usually goes away quickly with more frequent breastfeeding or after the mother’s milk comes in.
If your baby gets jaundice, this is not something that you caused! You do not have to stop breastfeeding. Talk to WIC staff or your baby’s healthcare provider. They can help you make sure your baby eats well and the jaundice goes away.
